When it comes to Christmas, everyone has family traditions that they love to uphold. Whether it’s a family dinner or a night out on the town, it’s a part of their legacy and it brings their loved ones together. After all, it’s the season of love, laughter, and joy. But just like we have our personal Christmas rituals, celebrities have them too. And while some of them are wacky ones, there are wonderful ones that truly emphasize what it means to be a family. Here are some of them:
1. Jessica Alba
The Fantastic Four star’s idea of a Christmas tradition is having her extended family home and engaging in cook-offs and sing-offs. “I love holiday traditions. We have a big family-and-friend sit-down dinner. Cash, me, and my parents throw down in the kitchen, and my dad makes the most yummy tender turkeys. He makes a spicy version—seasoned with fresh jalapeños—and a classic version with all the fixings. We love Christmas caroling with an improv version of ’12 Days of Christmas’ that’s always pretty epic. We also do our version of a White Elephant that’s an ornament exchange for all of the adults,” the mum-of-three told InStyle in 2015.
2. Kurt Russel
The Christmas Chronicles actor is just as passionate about the holiday. “We always, we always trim the tree on Christmas Eve during the day and into the night,” he told Us Weekly. “And we have a big meal and then the kids put their pajamas on and they hang up their stockings, and we got the fire going, and then when it gets dark we always choose someone to read T’was the Night Before Christmas.”
3. Blake Lively
The Gossip Girl star is one of five siblings and every Christmas, it’s a tradition for all of them to huddle into the same bed on Christmas morning for a long chit-chat. “I don’t know how my family does this but everybody gets in the same bed,” she told Canadian magazine The Kit in 2014, quoted Honey Nine. “Somehow we just spend seven hours a day just chatting. It’s really nice to have that time.” And that includes the actress’s husband, actor Ryan Reynolds and their kids.
4. The Jonas Brothers
The three-brother band have one thing on their mind during the holiday — tamales. “Every year we eat tamales on Christmas morning and it’s pretty awesome,” he told InStyle. “My mum started it and it’s special because Kevin, Joe and I have grown up doing it. It’s very like us to have tamales on Christmas.” Speaking to People, Denise, the brothers’ mother said, “When we were first married our families lived in different parts of the country, so we decided to establish some traditions and do them ourselves. On Christmas Eve we try to do some caroling around the piano. Christmas day I make something they all love, a sweet potato casserole from a dear friend’s mother in Georgia.”
5. Melissa Joan Hart
The former Sabrina the Teenage Witch actress admitted that her Christmas tradition is to dress down instead of dress up. The mother-of-three also asks her guests to arrive wearing their loudest, most tackiest Christmas sweaters. “It just popped in my head that I wanted to do something really silly,” she told People magazine. “People got very, very creative.”
6. Sandra Bullock
The 55-year-old mother-of two has her own traditions for her kids, Louis and Laila. “Usually I dress as Santa and sneak outside so that there is a Santa sighting in the dark Christmas Eve,” she said to People. “But Louis is onto me that I always have to ‘walk the dog’ when the family has their sighting. So I ordered the XL Santa suit this year and will pass the torch to my brother-in-law so I may watch Laila see him for the first time.” But that isn’t the only thing she does. She also has authentic German sausages smuggled into the United States in order to keep alive the tradition her late mother started.
7. Drew Barrymore
She may be one of Charlie’s Angels on screen but the actress is a true Christmas spirit off-screen. One of her family traditions involve the tree ornaments. “I started the brown box with the black sharpie that says ‘Christmas Ornaments,’ like on the top shelf of the garage. So, every year we pull out the ornaments and we talk about them,” she told E! News. “That, to me, was like such a fantasy as a kid, to have that consistency. And for some reason, the few little years that were consistent, ornaments were so memory-inducing to me.”
8. Mila Kunis
The actress who is married to actor Ashton Kutcher has a very different kind of tradition for her family. “So far, our tradition is no presents for the kids,” she revealed to ET Online in 2017. “We’re instituting it this year because when the kids are [younger than] one, it doesn’t really matter. Last year when we celebrated Christmas, Wyatt was two and it was too much. We didn’t give her anything — it was the grandparents. The kid no longer appreciates the one gift. They don’t even know what they’re expecting; they’re just expecting stuff.”
But not wanting to completely ban the idea of gifts, she said, “We’ve told our parents, ‘We’re begging you — if you have to give her something, pick one gift.’ Otherwise, we’d like to take a charitable donation, to the Children’s hospital or a pet, whatever you want. That’s our new tradition.”
Well, it seems like everyone has their own unique way of celebrating their family traditions during the holidays. So why don’t you share some of yours with us? Tell us about your Christmas traditions in the comments!
