Tom Hanks has always managed to wow his audiences with his incredible talent. From Forrest Gump to Angels and Demons, he’s shown us just how versatile he can be. But perhaps most importantly, he has been known to be one of the friendliest people in the film industry.
So when the news came out that he would be playing someone equally amazing in his new movie, it’s no surprise that people were excited. After all, he’s taken the role of the iconic children’s TV host and all-round nice guy, Mr. Fred Rogers in the movie, A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood.
And to really capture the essence and kindness of the late Fred Rogers, the 63-year-old Sleepless in Seattle star had to work extra hard to embody his earnestness, nuance, and emotional maturity. But that isn’t all he took from Mr. Rogers. The lessons he learned actually did something more than that — keep his marriage to Rita Wilson strong.
Hanks and Wilson first met in 1981 on the sets of Bosom Buddies before getting married in 1988 and bringing two sons into the world, according to Oprah Magazine. They’ve been a power couple since day one and it might seem like their life is almost perfect. However, like every couple, they too have their fights.
When Entertainment Online‘s Kevin Frazier had a sit down with Hanks and his A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood co-star Matthew Rhys recently, the Academy Award winner opened up about how some of the teachable lessons from Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood had ended some of the occasional spats between him and Wilson.
“When my wife and I are going at it on those rare occasions, when she is letting me know that I’m not really listening to her and I’m trying to establish what the ground rules are [for the argument], when we’re going at it like that, one of us will say, ‘Well, you know what? You know what, honey? It’s good to talk. It’s good to say the things we feel,'” Hanks said with a smile, something reminiscent of the late Mr. Rogers. “And I learned that from Mister Rogers,” he added.
The actor also revealed that the 31-year-strong couple spent a lot of their free time together on their mutual hobby – cooking. “We make soup together,” Hanks said. “Like, if we have a day off and there’s nothing going on… it takes about two to three hours.”
As for his role and how he connected to the inspiration behind his character, he mentioned that though he doesn’t share a lot with the late Mr. Rogers, there are a couple of things they have in common.
He said, “I don’t allow anyone to take advantage of my good nature and I don’t know that Fred did either. I’m nothing like Fred Rogers in any way, shape, or form. Except, I think, I wake up in the morning thinking, ‘Hey, it’s a nice day, it’s a good day. Let’s try to make it a little bit better.'”
Well, we are grateful to have an actor such as Tom Hanks always vying for a better world and maybe we can learn something from him as well, whether it’s about kindness or how to keep a relationship strong.
