The ability to give back to the society speaks volumes about a person and his personality. It shows their humility as well as their gratitude to the past that enabled their growth. Six-time NBA champion, Michael Jordan is one such person. His generosity and thoughtfulness were seen when he opened up a clinic for the less fortunate in his hometown.
According to the Guardian, basketball legend Michael Jordan opened a clinic for the underprivileged people in his hometown of Charlotte, in North Carolina. “This is a very emotional thing for me to be able to give back to a community that has supported me over the years,” said the star in an emotional speech during the inaugural ceremony held on 17 October 2019.
In his speech, the star said that the 7-million-dollar Novant Health Michael Jordan Family Medical Clinic is a way of showing his gratitude to the community that supported him throughout his career. “It’s … from the heart— a passion from what this city, this state has given back to me. I can never repay what you have given to me. But this is a start,” said the athlete, who turned into a business mogul.
Jordan added, “I’ve gone off and made my life in Illinois and other places. But I know where it all begins. And I don’t need my mother to constantly remind me about that. I can only give in gratitude for what I can never repay.”
He further went on to thank the people who worked behind him to make the clinic a reality. He added, “I stand here before you as a proud parent, son, obviously a member of this community. You see my name, but yet you see a lot of people behind me and the commitment, especially from my mom, about caring for other people and being a part of a community that matters,” said the 56-year-old.
The announcement that the star donated $7 million to get the center started was made in 2017. Being a long-time resident of the state, Michael wanted to help the struggling residents of the area by offering them better medical facilities. The center is located in a lower-income section of the city and will also cater to the needs of uninsured or under-insured people. According to the Daily Mail, the center has been in operation for about three weeks now. About 300 people have already benefited from the health care clinic.
Additionally, this $7 million will be used to make a second branch of the clinic; and is expected to open on Statesville Avenue. According to Charlotte Observer, the two branches together are expected to serve at least 35,000 adults and children over the next five years.
Over the years, the sports legend was involved in many philanthropic works. As a player, Jordan once donated the salary of one entire season to 9/11 related charity groups. He is also the chairman of the Charlotte Hornets Foundation that is focused on strengthening the area of Charlotte through charity contributions. He donated $2 million towards Hurricane Florence relief efforts.
However, his recent generosity is the largest single donation ever made by him.
