When Camila Alves once talked about her husband, Matthew McConaughey and the romantic roles that he’s played onscreen, she joked, “Sometimes I’m like, ‘Can we bring that guy home for a little bit?'” But even though Matthew McConaughey isn’t the typical heart-throb, he’s a true gentleman who shows his wife nothing but love and compassion.

From the moment he laid eyes on her, Matthew McConaughey felt the sparks and it was love at first sight for him when they met in 2006, according to Us Weekly. “When I saw the woman who is now my wife, I was at a club making margaritas at a table with friends. When she walked in wearing this aqua dress, I went, ‘Whoa, what is that?’ I didn’t say, ‘Who is that?'” he told Playboy, according to Martha Stewart Weddings.

He continued, “Grace, identity, constitution, beauty—where’s that from? What is that? As soon as she caught my eye, a little voice goes in my head: ‘This is not the kind of woman you call across the room. Boy, get your ass out of that chair.'” It took him several tries before she finally agreed to go out on a date with him after that. That’s when he cooked for her, as reported by Nicki Swift, and it eventually led to them feeling a strong connection.

Camila Alves wasn’t even that excited about the idea of marriage when she was younger. But seeing that she’d found the right man to exchange vows with, she knew it was worth taking the leap.

“I think it’s something that we evolved to,” she told Access, as reported by People. “I was never the girl that grew up saying I want to get married. I actually told my parents to not expect me to get married.”

The two of them tied the knot in 2012 and set off on a whole new adventure together as a married couple. “In the end, our understanding was, Let’s go make a covenant, with you, me, and God,” he told GQ. “And let’s understand that this is not a destination, this is the beginning of an adventure that we’re taking together.”

The couple has three children together, Levi, Vida, and Livingston, and McConaughey tries to be the perfect husband and father to his family. He makes her feel special by putting his thought and heart into the little things. He told Today, “I don’t have a certain thing I buy her. An earnest handwritten note, that she knows I sat down and took some time and has some poetry to it, that’s worth more than whatever retail I paid for something.”

Family is always a top priority for the actor who loves spending time with his children. “Friday night’s the no-curfew night. It’s pizza night, it’s a movie night, it’s ‘all the kids can sleep with Mama and Papa night,’” he said. “That night can go late. Sometimes we have to lie about the time and say it’s midnight when it’s really 10 ’cause we can tell it’s gonna go to 2.”

They love spending time together, but even when busy schedules eat into their family time, they try their best to work around it. “We cook together. Even if I’m running late from work I say, ‘We’re having a late dinner,’” Camila Alves said. “Does it happen every single day of the week? No, but it happens a lot.”

What the well-bonded couple also do is steal away a few romantic moments just for themselves every now and then. “[We do] a lot of staying at home, cooking together or getting a hotel room that is 10 minutes away from the house,” she said. ‘Just the fact that you don’t have to wake up to kids screaming for help with something — it already does something to a mom’s brain.”

Camila Alves will always have Matthew McConaughey heart and the couple, well aware of the bond they share, are working hard to keep things as loving and encouraging as they can for their children. He said, “I have been very faithful to my wife, very selfishly. I like being under her spell. I don’t want to break that spell.”
