Age is often associated with maturity and patience, especially when it comes to long-lasting relationships. But the truth is, when you’ve found the one, there’s nothing stopping you from having your happily ever after. It makes you realize that what truly matters is your willingness to make it work despite anything that may pose a hurdle. Couples with a wide age gap are often met with a certain veiled disapproval by society because the relationship is not viewed as something that would last. However, while judgments continue, some couple proves that age is just a number. Hugh Jackman and Deborra-Lee Furness are such a couple.
The actor was just 28 years old when he tied the knot with his lady love, who was 41 at the time. However, just weeks after meeting her in 1995, Hugh Jackman admits he realized, “we were going to be together for the rest of our lives.”
Jackman met the love of his life long before he made it into Hollywood. He was a beginner who got smitten by the Australian star. Talking about the first time he met his wife, the actor said, “My first job out of drama school — it was a massive break for me. I was really scared. Deb, she was a big star. I get picked up, and Deb is in the front seat of the car. I’ll never forget. She took off her seatbelt and she turned around and put out her hand and took off her sunglasses and said, ‘Hi, I’m Deborra-lee Furness, nice to meet you.’ I remember thinking, ‘I like this girl.’”
The actor became friends Furness but soon realized, he wanted to be more than friends, and the fact that she was 14 years older hardly seemed to matter. He knew he was into her and was sure they belonged together. “I knew two weeks into meeting Deb that we were going to be together for the rest of our lives,” the Logan actor said to Today.
But, there was something stopping Jackman from confessing his love to her. She was a huge star and Jackman had only started out in the industry, a struggling actor who was yet to make his mark on the big screen. Moreover, they were acting together in a TV series. “..I’ve got a crush on my leading lady. This is the thing you do not do. It’s unprofessional and embarrassing,” said Jackman. However, weeks later everything fell in place.
Jackman broke his awkward silence and invited her for a dinner along with 20 other people. While he thought he had succeeded in hiding his feelings for her, Deborra knew there was something wrong. “She said, ‘I noticed you haven’t talked to me in like a week, what’s going on?’ I said, ‘I got a crush on you. I’ll get over it, I’m sorry.’ She goes, ‘Oh? Because I’ve got a crush on you too.’ I never in a million years thought she reciprocated,” said Jackman.
And that was the beginning of their magical relationship. However, what convinced Jackman they were right for each other was the fact that he could share the “tracksuit pant version” of himself with Furness. “When you’re dating, you literally put on the best version of yourself,” he said. “How do you transition from that person to actually truly being yourself? The tracksuit pant version of yourself,” he revealed.
Jackman was right about his wife. “Until you feel that comfortable with your partner, you don’t really know if you’re right together. So literally from day one, Deb and I had that feeling. It was like a relief. I could just be myself. I am not saying we don’t ever dress up or impress each other, but being comfortable is a key,” said Jackman.
After a year of seeing each other, the two decided to seal the deal by tying the knot in 1996. With two children and 23 years together, the couple has nothing to complain about. “So we’ve been on this unbelievable journey, places we never thought we’d go to and we’ve done it together,” says Jackman. The couple nourished their relationship with an everlasting love that age just remained a number.
