One may think that a boy asking for a girl’s parents for her hand in marriage before actually proposing is an archaic practice. But quite a few men still do it. In fact, some even go to great lengths to win the girl’s family over. Like this man, who literally traversed a great distance to ask for his girlfriend’s hand in marriage.
According to Epoch Times, Matthew Russo met the love of his life, Kristina Broughton in California in 2011. After five years of dating each other, Mathew knew it was time for him to propose to her. He knew how close Kristina was to her family, so he decided to meet them and ask them for their blessing before taking the big leap. He decided to go on a weekend trip to 3 cities — New York, Orlando, and Las Vegas, which are across the country, over the course of just 2 days.
He told his girlfriend that he was going to New York to celebrate a friend’s birthday but instead he went over to meet a person who was very dear to his girlfriend. It was none other than her father. Kristina who adored her dad had often talked about how similar he was to her father. The sweet man traveled to Highland Mills in New York to see the girl’s father who had passed away in 2007. He went over to his tombstone with a bouquet of flowers and asked him for his blessings. The man who knelt before the tombstone made a heart-touching and sincere speech.
“I wish I would’ve had the chance to actually have met you. Kristina tells me all the time about how you and I are very similar. I take pride in that considering how highly she speaks of you. I hope you’ll accept me and allow me to one day be your son-in-law. I promise to adopt your role as a caregiver. I promise to protect and look after your daughter for as long as I live,” told the man.
He then went on to surprise her mother in Orlando. Her mother who was overcome with emotions readily agreed to his proposal said, “Her father would be so happy too, Matt. He knows you’re good to my daughter, that you love my daughter.” After his stop at her mom’s house, he went over to her grandmother’s home in Las Vegas. The elderly woman who was as happy as the girl’s mother handed him an 80-year-old diamond engagement ring that had been passed on for generations. In total, he had traveled 3,000 miles to make sure he met his girlfriend’s complete family.
Matthew who had recorded all these special moments compiled it into a video and decided it was time to pop the question. On June 11, 2016, the man asked his girlfriend to accompany him to a friend’s birthday. He took her to Napa Valley Winery, the place where they had first met and fallen in love years ago. He showed her the video and Kristina could not control the tears that poured out of eyes. Matthew then got down on one knee and popped the big question. Kristina who was overjoyed immediately said yes. Eventually, the two love birds tied the knot and promised to be with each other in September 2018.
