When Tom Hardy slips into the role of a rugged, brute, and sometimes cold-blooded character, he makes it look so easy, almost like he was tailor-made for those roles. But in real life, Tom Hardy is a softie, a charming romantic who has nothing but love for the woman in his life and their two children.
“Are you as tough in real life as you are on screen?” Cosmopolitan asked the actor and he responded with praises for his wife, Charlotte Riley, saying, “Ha! Me? Tough? No! My fiancée (now wife) Charlotte has, pound for pound, a better punch than I do!”
The two of them met while starring in the 2009 TV adaption of Wuthering Heights. It didn’t take them long to see how special the other was and they got engaged by 2010, according to Hello! However, the pair didn’t rush into exchanging wedding vows.
They were often asked when they would finally get married, and Hardy once said, according to The Telegraph, “You’d have to ask Charlotte when we’re getting married. She’s a difficult woman to pin down, as she’s always so busy with work.”
The couple spent roughly four years engaged to each other and Hardy would certainly agree that she was worth the wait.
“I can wait for her as long as it takes,” Hardy had previously told Elle in a 2012 interview.
Whenever the lovebirds had to stay apart, they took to the old-fashioned way of showing each other their love, according to the Daily Mail. With a smile on her face, Riley said, “I’ve always been a keen letter writer and so Tom and I write to each other most days when we are apart – or at least every other day.”
Hardy calls himself a “lucky man” to have Riley in his life, and they finally tied the knot in a secret wedding in 2014.
When he’s in front of the camera, Hardy is either a villain, a convict, an ex-marine, or simply an intriguing character. But when he’s with his wife, he can’t stop himself from gushing about her. They even have cute names for each other; he calls her “Charlie Monkey” while she calls him “Boo”.
But there are certain instances when he’s onscreen power comes out in real life, and that’s when he’s defending a woman’s honor. In one of his interviews, he also said, “Charlotte… is here with me. She says, ‘I have to stop him from standing up for a woman’s honor all the bloody time.’ That’s what my missus says.”
Sharing with Us Weekly about what he loves most about Riley, he said, “Aw, she’s pure. She’s just a very kind, pure person.” When Riley welcomed Hardy to become a big part of her life, she also welcomed, with open arms, his son, Louis from Hardy’s previous relationship.
“Louis is four and the most incredible, intelligent, creative little human being I have ever met – he is amazing. I feel very honoured to be his stepmum,” Riley said about her husband’s son. And when asked if she would have children of her own, she said, “Hell, yes, I want babies, lots of them. Definitely, absolutely definitely.”
In October 2015, the couple had their first child together, and in 2018, the couple welcomed their second. With the changes of parenthood having taken over him, he told Esquire, “…there is no harder job on the planet, and more important, than parenting. You’ve got the military, police, doctors, service personnel — massive respect, huge consequences — but parenting? It’s beyond a job, isn’t it.”
But when you have the right person beside you, raising a child can be one of the greatest joys. When Riley was asked about how Hardy is around the house, she said, according to The Herald, “He’s great around the house. We do designated things. I love recycling. He’s good at making the bed. It works brilliantly.”
When they’re together, be it on screen or off screen, the couple give only their best to make things work.
