Disney child star Hilary Duff is not a teenager anymore. The 32-year-old Lizzie McGuire star is a mom-of-two, engaged, and giddily happy with her partner, Matthew Koma, whom she met thanks to their love of music.
She met the record producer while working on her first solo album in almost a decade in 2015. Unfortunately, it was right after her split from her ex-husband, Mike Comrie, with whom she has a son, Luca. The single mom dove back into work with the series Younger in 2015 while working on the album Breathe in. Breathe out, which is largely about her break up.
While working on the album, the couple reportedly hit it off but they didn’t decide to date each other then. “They had great chemistry in the studio,” a source told Us Weekly about their collaboration during the album. “Hilary thinks Matt is very talented and cute,” the source said.
Two years later, they started dating in earnest but faced a few more hiccups in their relationship because of grueling schedules. They split from each other in March 2017 only to resume dating each other in October 2017. Duff shared on The Talk (via E!News) that December, “Timing is such a big deal… third time’s a charm!” She continued, that she believes that when “you have history and a past with someone and love, and just because it doesn’t work out the first time, as long as there’s not too much damage done, then, it can always work out again.”
Once he got back from the tour, the “timing” really worked out between the two — with Duff throwing him a birthday bash, where he received approval from her mother as well. “I got a really nice guy,” Duff told E! News at the June 2018 Younger premiere. “He’s so great. My mom was at Matt’s birthday and she’s like, ‘I just love him, I love him so much, he’s the best!’ I’m like, ‘I’m here, I exist you know.”
One of the main concerns for Duff as a mother was the relationship Matthew had with Luca. And, she was not alone in it. “I think that Luca liking Matt was the biggest concern of Matt’s life. He didn’t want to be forceful and bring a bunch of gifts over you know? He was like, ‘I am just going to let him come to me.’ I think it was a really smart move because now they have such a special relationship and they have their games that they play that I’m not really involved in. They call themselves the sweet team and I’m the broccoli team, which is so unfair,” the mother told Parents.
“Matt is so helpful and so great with Luca. He knows that Luca has a great dad too, so he is like, ‘I feel so lucky that I get to experience watching him grow up and be his special friend’,” the Cinderella Story actress said.
It wasn’t long after when the couple welcomed their first child together. “Guess what guys! @matthewkoma and I made a little princess of our own and we couldn’t be more excited!!!!!!” she shared on Instagram, while he said, “We made a baby girl! She will be as beautiful and sweet as her mother…@hilaryduff another incredible chapter begins.”
Later, the singer-actress shared that they have named their child as Banks Violet Bair through an Instagram post. “This little bit has fully stolen our hearts! She joined our world at home on Thursday afternoon and is absolute magic.”
The musically-talented couple has had more to celebrate since the birth of their child as Koma proposed to the Agent Cody Banks actress. “I came home from work on a random Tuesday, and he’s like ‘Let’s go for a walk. Let’s go check out this park,'” she shared on The Talk. She was resistant initially because she “just wanted to eat dinner in bed and watch Game of Thrones“. However, she agreed to it.
“So we go, we find this gorgeous park and he presents me with this book that he said he’s been working on for a while,” she shared. “He’s like ‘It’s our story’ and he had this amazing guy, Shane, do all of these illustrations. And he was like ‘We are going to forget things along the way so we need to constantly fill this out so our kids can know our story.'”
The book had a compartment hiding her square-cut engagement ring on the final page. “He got down on one knee and he’s like, ‘I forget everything I’m supposed to say, but you’re my best friend’,” she summed up. “It was so sweet.”
The book was meant to be something that would signify them as a family unit. Koma is a proud father and not afraid to show it, which she loves about him. “Babe. You are the most natural papa bear I’ve seen,” she wrote in an Instagram post, on his first Father’s Day with Banks. “You always put us first. You know exactly what to say. Affectionate beyond. Calm and strong. The kids don’t even know how lucky they are that it’s you…. but they will. It’s a gift I get to witness every day. We love you more than words.”
