Every single time Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn come together on the big screen, it’s nothing short of an absolute treat for the viewers. The very same spark that the doting couple share in real life, they bring onscreen when they step in front of the camera.
This time, fans everywhere will get the wonderful chance to see them together in the Netflix sequel, The Christmas Chronicles 2, where Russell will reprise his role has Santa Claus and this time, will be joined by the love of his life as Mrs Claus.
Excited about working alongside Kurt Russell, who has been her partner for over 35 years now, Goldie Hawn shared a post on Instagram and said, “A year later and I’m still ringing Santa’s jingle bells. I couldn’t be happier to be working on @christmaschronicles again with Kurt Russell, my real life Santa.”
Over the three and half decades that they’ve been together, fans have admired the great chemistry that the duo share. And the director of the Netflix movie, Chris Columbus got to see the same up close as he worked with Mr. and Mrs. Claus on set. “There’s a tremendous amount of respect there and a tremendous amount of love and trust, partially because they’ve been together for so long,” Columbus told People. “They just get along beautifully.”
The two of them haven’t starred in anything big together onscreen since they worked together in the late 1980s in the film, Overboard, as reported by Today. Now, with the couple bringing their fun and delightful selves together for the holiday-themed movie has got fans waiting in anticipation.
“There’s a lot of laughter and it’s just a really, really fun set,” Columbus also added.
For Russell, there was a special reason behind stepping into the shoes of Santa Claus for the movie. Talking about the first edition of The Christmas Chronicles in 2018, he told E! News, “When I read the script, I was very excited about it. I suppose the reason is because my dad was this—he was just the greatest Santa, you know? And there was always mystery to it, as to whether he really was Santa, or he was Santa’s helper. So, I brought a great deal of that lure, our family lure.”
Seeing the script of the movie made him reminisce all the Christmas memories he shared with his family and the traditions he carried forward with the family he now shares with Hawn. Those unforgettable memories were what pushed Russell to take on the role.
“I began to call back on the wonderful generations of the legend of Santa Claus and my own family, from my grandparents to my parents, to me, to my children with our family with Goldie [Hawn] and I share,” Russell told Global News. “I loved the opportunity as an actor to find out about Santa Claus. And I immediately said to myself, ‘I want to do the real guy.’ And that was what Chris Columbus’ take was, that this is a real person.”
The mystery behind Santa Claus has always tickled the minds of kids and the character adds to the festivities of the holidays. For Russell, it was no different and playing this movie helped him strengthen the connection he felt with his father.
“This movie for me is like a love letter to my dad. He was our Santa Claus. We never knew if he was Santa Claus or if he was just really close to Santa Claus. We didn’t know if he was just our dad being Santa Claus because secretly it was always shrouded in mystery,” Russell recalled. “Wonderful, wonderful mystery. He was just fantastic. But he did have his intimidation factor. It was like you need to be asleep when Santa Claus comes around. It created a wonderful sense and I suppose more than anything that is what I loved about doing this movie. It’s a connection for me to my father.”
