“The world lost a little piece of sunshine… see you on the other side kid,” wrote Ashton Kutcher in a message he posted after Brittany Murphy’s death.
There certainly was a ray of sunshine that Brittany Murphy brought with herself whenever she stepped onscreen in the shoes of different characters. When she passed away on December 20, 2009, the story of her death left Hollywood asking many questions and sparking various rumors. Through all the speculation, there were two people who were deeply devastated by her death—her mother, Sharon Murphy, and her husband, Simon Monjack — trying their best to cope with their sudden loss.
The day after her death, when Simon Monjack spoke about his wife’s death. He told Access Hollywood, “My world was destroyed yesterday.”
It was a regular day until her mother “screamed for me and I ran”.
“She was lying on the patio trying to catch her breath,” Sharon Murphy recalled, as quoted by The Hollywood Reporter. “I said ‘Baby, get up.’ She said: ‘Mommy, I can’t catch my breath. Help me. Help me.'”
Simon Monjack, remembering the horrifying moment, said, “She said to her mom: ‘I’m dying. I’m going to die. Mommy, I love you.'”
Murphy was rushed to the hospital and the actress was pronounced dead at 10:04 a.m.; her life came to an end at the age of 32, according to CNN.
“She was really sick with pneumonia, very anemic, and she was taking medication,” the L.A. Coroner Asst. Chief Ed Winter told People, “and all that combined killed her.”
Dispelling some of the rumors surrounding her death, Simon Monjack said, “She found love. We found love. Brittany didn’t get to where Brittany was with anyone controlling her… Brittany was Brittany.”
Even though death separated them not long after they tied the knot in April 2007, Brittany Murphy previously told OK, according to MTV, “The easiest decision I ever made in my life was getting married,” she said. “He’s flown around the world to make sure we spend every single night together.”
Broken over the death of his wife, Simon Monjack was ready to give anything to spend another day with the one he loved. He said, “I had a life I never dreamed. I have seen the sunset on five continents. I’d trade it all for one more day with Brittany. I lost my life. She was my best friend, and she was a little girl who wanted her husband right there. What do I have left?”
In May 2010, when Sharon Murphy walked into the home’s master’s bedroom, she found Simon Monjack unconscious in the very same bedroom that she found her daughter unconscious about five months before, according to TMZ. She called 911, but sometime after paramedics arrived, Monjack was pronounced dead, when resuscitation efforts failed.
Simon Monjack’s death almost mirrored the death of his wife, Brittany Murphy, five months after he lost her. At the age of 40, Simon Monjack also died from a case of pneumonia and anemia.
Around 4 years after her daughter’s death, Sharon Murphy wrote an emotional letter and wrote, “From the day of her birth, Brittany was my precious, more dear to me than anything or anyone in the universe. I have been devastated by her loss and that of my son-in-law [Simon Monjack] and have remained in seclusion in my mourning.”
While the two, almost identical deaths spun a number of controversies, the people who closely knew Brittany Murphy could also see what a great loss her death was.
“Brittany Murphy was an incredible ray of light to so many people. Her smile was contagious,” wrote singer and actress, Jessica Simpson, while actress, Alyssa Milano, wrote, “She was a sweet soul, with a lot of talent and heart.”
