The 71st Primetime Emmy Awards that was held at the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles on 22 September was a grand affair. Celebrities of our favorite TV shows walked in stylish red carpet looks and captured the attention of people worldwide. Apart from that, the event also witnessed some unforgettable and emotional moments. One among them was the In Memoriam tribute ceremony that paid tributes to the lost stars of the industry.
Actress and director Regina King took to stage to introduce the In Memoriam tribute. “Tonight as we celebrate the very best of the past television season, we also take the time to remember the many legends we lost this year. Although they may be gone, their legacies now endure,” said King. The heartwarming speech was followed by Halsey’s emotional performance. The soulful singer sang a version of Cyndi Lauper’s “Time After Time” while a screen displayed the faces of entertainers who passed away earlier this year.
Among them was the Beverly Hills 90210 star, Luke Perry. The actor, who rose to fame through the series, died on March 4, 2019 after suffering a major stroke. The death of the star shocked his family and friends in the industry. “Everyone just loved him. The cast keeps talking about all their wonderful memories of Luke. They are trying to focus on the fun times they enjoyed on set with him,” said a source to ET following his death. The 52-year-old actor was also known for his performance in the series Riverdale, where he played the role of Fred Andrews.
“We are deeply saddened to learn today about the passing of Luke Perry. A beloved member of the Riverdale, Warner Bros. and CW family, Luke was everything you would hope he would be: an incredibly caring, consummate professional with a giant heart, and a true friend to all. A father figure and mentor to the show’s young cast, Luke was incredibly generous, and he infused the set with love and kindness. Our thoughts are with Luke’s family during this most difficult time,” said a statement released by Perry’s Riverdale, Warner Bros., and CW family after his death. Fans worldwide also mourned the loss of the great star.
People reported that Perry will be remembered on the new season of Riverdale. His close friend and co-star from 90210, Shannen Doherty will appear on the show to pay tributes to the late actor. Apart from Perry, Gloria Vanderbilt, Penny Marshall, Peter Fonda, Stan Lee, and many other familiar silver screen faces were honored at the show.
