After 55 Years On Air, 'Days of Our Lives' Might Come To An End As The Entire Cast Is Released From Their Contracts

Days of our Lives has been on air since 1965 and is hailed as one of the longest-running TV shows of all time. It has aired 13,000 episodes to date and is one of the flag-bearing shows in the soap-opera genre. However, if reports on TVLine are to be believed, the 55-year-old soap opera TV show is soon going to see its end as the makers have released the cast members from their contract.

An insider revealed to TVLine that the makers have decided to stop production next month but the show has enough episodes in the kitty to last through summer 2020, if they decide to come back with season 56 of the show. Things look very shaky and uncertain for the show and actors, as they might be asked to return on lower salaries, should the makers consider renewing their contracts to continue filming. This could mean, that the ground-breaking show could end up losing more than half of its cast members.

“It’s actually a shrewd — if cynical — business move,” says one insider to TVLine. “If Days gets picked up, [makers] can offer the actors new contacts at a reduced rate and with a ‘take-it-or-leave’ it attitude. Worst case scenario, they lose half their cast. Best case scenario [for makers], everyone agrees to return at a lower salary.”

Created by Ted and Betty Corday, Days of Our Lives is one of four remaining daytime dramas, sharing the daily viewer fan base with CBS’ The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful, and ABC’s General Hospital, reports ScreenRant.

Set in the fictional Midwestern town of Salem, Days of Our Lives has entertained generations for decades now with some sudden twists, shocking deaths, and strong plotlines. It has also been the launching pad for many now-famous actors.

Currently, Sony Pictures Television and NBC are in negotiations to renew the series. Despite the sudden unexpected turn of events, a source tells TVLine, “All indications are that NBC would like to keep the show going.” But this is being considered as a great opportunity for the makers to bring forth some drastic changes in the plot and the backdrop.

This week, the soap is fast-forwarding the narrative by one year. “This is a great way to reset things in Salem,” executive producer Ken Corday told TVInsider.com of the time jump. “It will be a catalyst for many more [changes] to follow.”

On the other hand, the news of the show being cancelled have been deemed as “a clickbait story” by a source who told PEOPLE, “The show shoots months and months in advance and they’ve gotten so far ahead that the cast was prepared ages ago for the fact that they would all be put on hiatus until closer to pick-up (aka renewal) time, for scheduling reasons. The show will almost definitely get renewed and this was not news to literally anyone on the show, nor is anyone truly concerned.”

Nonetheless, the news of its cancellation has met a wave of sadness as the fans of the show start a social media campaign requesting support for it.
