1. They always contradict their own words

Do you find your partner saying one thing and doing another? They’re smooth with their words, so it’s easy to fall for their charm. However, you notice the glitch when they do quite the opposite of what they preached. And what’s worse is when you confront them on their contradiction, they flat out refuse it. They’re either in complete denial of what you are certain, or they come up with a seemingly credible reason that makes you believe that you were wrong to question their so-called honest motives.

2. They’re able to change their stripes easily

Lying comes naturally to them. It’s a skill they’re born with and have used to their advantage in manipulating your thoughts. They can easily say something and switch when it feels like their words are working against them. You can’t help but believe a gaslighter’s stories as they’ve mastered the art over the years. When you notice signs, it’s best to either call them out on it or break free from the cycle by ending a relationship all together.

3. They’re found in the natural habitat – Denial

Even though you’ve caught them lying, their excuses are tainted with certain things that play to their advantage. They find it easy to deny something and won’t accept the fact they can even remotely be wrong. They will either brush aside your concerns about it like it means nothing, or possibly turn hostile when confronted. They’re against change and won’t see it fit to admit that they’re in the wrong. They’ll make promises and claims and eventually end up denying any memory of it at all.

You don’t realize that these master manipulators often tend to have an edge over you by banking on your weakness. They would have either learned your secrets over time or taken bits and pieces off people who know you. They know what makes you vulnerable and will not shy away from using it against you. You may even end up questioning your core values and things you care about indiscriminately, all the while looking like they’re the victims in a situation.

You would have invested your time in your partner believing they’ll be there for you but partners who are gaslighters in disguise use that energy to make you feel miserable and unfulfilled. They work at your confidence and then slowly make their way to other traits that define who you are. They lower your spirits by lying and putting you down, where you end up questioning everything that you do or say.

It’s easy to be trapped in a relationship filled with confusion. They find it easier to take a dig at you when you’re in the dark about your relationship. You’re the most accessible to them when you’re emotionally weak, broken and vulnerable. They attack your value and worth making you question things you don’t have the answers to. When you try to mask your confusion by bonding with them, it gives them the perfect opportunity to strike and change the truth.

7. They’re masters at magnifying your fears and worries

Everyone has their own set of worries and fears which are hidden deep inside and sometimes get projected at the worst times. However, what if someone else who has knowledge of your deepest fears magnifies it all the more? The confusion that you already feel only increases all the more. Your partner will make it look like you’re the one responsible for the mistakes in your life, as well as the relationship you both share. Their over-the-top accusations end up scaring you into believing it was your fault.

They make it look like you’re the villain in the story, while they’re the honest do-gooders who did their best in the relationship. They’ll have a group of people who will take their side, making you look like the one who needs to be making amends. Your sense of self is affected in the process, degrading the way you think of yourself. Gaslighters are experts at gaining the confidence of people and use the power of social connections to get their way in the relationship.

9. They work towards destroying your public image

Your credibility can be easily questioned if you’re confused about your own beliefs and core values, and a master manipulator who knows your darkest secrets will try and do just that. They gain an upper hand by making you others question your credibility. You’ll end up in your own space figuring out a way to break free. They can be sly about presenting you as the evil one, so work your way around making smart decisions which can cut you off from your toxic relationship.
